Ripped by peteg from darcs.

The goal is to support sending plain-text emails using the system's
MTA. "Plain-text" here means an arbitrary Unicode string.

Perhaps later we can extend this to fancier (MIME-encoded) things.

I hope someone who cares can mend the Windows support.
